The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to restart IPL 2025 as soon as possible following the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. While the decision has sparked hope among fans and franchises, the BCCI has said the final call depends on government approval.
IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed the BCCI’s intentions to resume the tournament immediately. Speaking to The Indian Express, Dhumal said the board is now working with stakeholders to finalize schedules and venues.
“Now that the ceasefire is in place, we’re exploring how to restart and complete the IPL. We need to figure out venue options, dates, and speak to everyone involved—including team owners and broadcasters. Most importantly, we need to consult with the government,” Dhumal said.
BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla told PTI Videos that board members and the IPL Governing Council will meet on Sunday (May 11) to discuss the possible schedule.
“With the war situation over, we are reviewing everything. We will discuss the best way to complete the tournament,” Shukla added.
According to reports, the BCCI has informed all IPL franchises and players to stay on standby. The board is also checking with teams about the availability of overseas players. Many foreign cricketers have already left India, which may pose a challenge for the league’s resumption.
An official from the BCCI told Hindustan Times that the tournament could resume as early as next weekend. However, a revised schedule could delay the final, which was earlier set for May 25. The board is considering extra doubleheaders to make up for the lost time.
As per ESPNcricinfo, the BCCI is considering three cities to host the remaining 16 matches—12 league games and 4 playoffs. The shortlisted venues are Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Eden Gardens in Kolkata is unlikely to host the final or Qualifier 2 due to logistical issues.
There are concerns over the availability of players from Australia and South Africa if the IPL playoffs are delayed. These players will need to prepare for the ICC World Test Championship Final, scheduled to begin at Lord’s on June 11.
“We may need to squeeze in a few more doubleheaders,” a BCCI official noted. “We’ll also try to allow teams to play at their home venues if possible.”
With talks underway and plans moving fast, IPL fans could soon see the league return to action. All eyes are now on the BCCI’s Sunday meeting and the government’s green signal.
