Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s return to Mumbai Indians (MI) for the upcoming IPL 2024 season has sparked a renewed sense of rivalry with his former team, the Gujarat Titans (GT). Pandya, who hails from Gujarat, expressed his feelings of returning home after two years away from MI, where he enjoyed early success in the IPL.

Pandya, a key player for Mumbai Indians in their title-winning campaigns between 2015 and 2021, rejoined the franchise in an all-cash deal with Gujarat Titans. The move also saw him take over the captaincy from veteran Rohit Sharma. Pandya had previously served as Sharma’s deputy during the 2023 ICC World Cup.

Speaking about his return to MI, Pandya said, “Returning to Mumbai Indians feels like coming back to where it all began. From my journey as a young lad in Baroda to Mumbai, this city has taught me growth, instilling in me humility and resilience.”

Pandya’s return sets the stage for an intense rivalry between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, especially as they are set to face each other in the IPL 2024 opener on March 24. The all-rounder acknowledged the significance of the match, stating, “Mumbai always challenges you to be better and now with the IPL, I have returned home after 2 years.”

To secure Pandya’s return, Mumbai Indians traded Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 17.5 crore. Pandya, who began his IPL journey with MI in 2015, was released by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. Despite leaving Mumbai, Pandya led GT to back-to-back IPL finals.

Reflecting on his early days with Mumbai Indians, Pandya highlighted the 2015 IPL season as a turning point in his career. “Representing Mumbai Indians amidst seasoned players was a turning point for me. When you get a chance to play with such established players on such a big platform, your life changes,” he said.

Pandya’s emotional return to Mumbai Indians is expected to add a new dimension to the MI vs GT rivalry in IPL 2024. As the two teams prepare to clash in the tournament opener, fans can expect a fierce competition between the former teammates turned rivals.
