Jasprit Bumrah once again showed why he is considered the best in the business when it comes to pressure situations. In a high-stakes IPL 2025 Eliminator match at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, the Mumbai Indians pacer produced a game-changing spell that crushed Gujarat Titans’ strong chase and secured a 20-run win for his team.
Mumbai Indians had set a daunting target of 229 for Gujarat Titans. At one stage, Gujarat looked well on course, cruising at 151/2 in 13.3 overs. Washington Sundar was in destructive form, scoring 48 off just 24 balls at a strike rate of 200. But the match turned dramatically when Bumrah bowled a toe-crushing yorker to dismiss Sundar.
That moment broke Gujarat’s momentum. After Sundar’s dismissal, the Titans lost their way and eventually finished at 208/6, falling short by 20 runs. Bumrah ended with brilliant figures of 1/27 in his four overs, giving away only eight runs in the final over and putting the game out of reach for GT.
Former cricketer Manoj Tiwary was full of praise for Bumrah, saying on Cricbuzz,
“Bumrah did his work like he always does. If he had not taken Washington’s wicket, he was batting at a strike rate of 200 — the match might have been a lot more tight. I remember Shane Warne being haunted by Sachin Tendulkar in his dreams. Now, in this age, every batter is haunted by Bumrah in their dreams.”
Ever since Jasprit Bumrah returned from injury this season, Mumbai Indians have looked a different team. Their bowling attack became stronger and more balanced. Tiwary highlighted this turnaround, stating:
“The success that MI have now, their mantra has been Bumrah. Since he rejoined after injury, their results have picked up. When Bumrah is there, the bowling becomes so strong that more than half the work is sorted for the captain. He’s never expensive in his spell.”
Even Mumbai Indians’ skipper Hardik Pandya acknowledged Bumrah’s importance after the win, saying,
“Whenever you think the game is getting far, just hand him the ball.”
Bumrah has taken 18 wickets in 11 matches this season at a staggering economy rate of just 6.36. As MI now move into Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad, Bumrah remains their biggest match-winner.
The loss was not just disappointing for the Gujarat Titans on the field—it left a visible emotional impact on players’ families. GT head coach Ashish Nehra’s son was seen crying inconsolably in the stands after the final ball was bowled. Several people around tried to comfort the young boy, but he couldn’t hold back his tears.
Even Shubman Gill’s sister, Shahneel, was seen visibly emotional. She had to be consoled by other family members in the audience. The defeat ended Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2025 campaign and crushed the hopes of their fans.
Shubman Gill’s captaincy also came under scrutiny, especially for his decision-making under pressure. Critics said GT were “more reactive than proactive,” and their errors — including three dropped catches — cost them dearly.
The Eliminator not only marked the end of Gujarat’s journey but also confirmed Jasprit Bumrah’s return to peak form. His deadly yorker to Washington Sundar was described as “an over of doom” by commentators and gave Sundar déjà vu of Ollie Pope’s dismissal in a previous series.
Ravichandran Ashwin even compared Bumrah to a “cheat code,” saying,
“He makes the captain look better than he actually is.”
With such confidence, control, and calm under pressure, Bumrah continues to be the most feared bowler in T20 cricket. Mumbai Indians eye another title. Their hopes will ride heavily on their pace spearhead.
