Australian all-rounder Beau Webster is excited about the chance to play in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final. He hopes to share the field with Cameron Green, who he called a “generational talent.”
Webster made his Test debut in January 2025 against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He impressed with both bat and ball. In three Tests, he scored 150 runs, including one fifty, and took three wickets.
Webster strengthened his case during his county cricket stint in England. Playing for Warwickshire, he scored 172 runs and picked up 10 wickets in four matches. This came after a successful 2024 season with Gloucestershire, where he scored 233 runs and took 16 wickets in four games.
These performances caught the attention of the Australian selectors. He was named in the squad for the WTC Final against South Africa, starting June 11.
Green is also in the squad. He scored three centuries in five county games for Gloucestershire. However, he is returning from back surgery and has not resumed bowling. This makes Webster’s all-round ability more important in English conditions.
“He (Green) is a phenomenal cricketer,” Webster told The Sydney Morning Herald. “He’s only 25 and already so good. I hope we both play in the final.”
Webster knows his role in the squad is not fixed. But he hopes his recent performances make him hard to ignore.
“I came to England to keep my game sharp,” he said. “My goal is to stay in the minds of the selectors and earn a spot in the XI.”
If both Green and Webster play, someone like Marnus Labuschagne may need to move up the order. Webster backed Marnus, who averages nine in his recent county games, to deliver when it matters.
“He is a match-winner,” Webster said. “Batting higher won’t affect him. He’s proven his class many times.”
Webster’s Test debut remains his favourite moment. He hit the winning runs at the SCG, helping Australia win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1.
“It was a whirlwind,” he said. “I wish I had taken in the moment more. Batting with Travis [Head] and finishing the match was unforgettable.”
Webster is proud of his start in international cricket. But he sees this as just the beginning.
“I’m proud of what I’ve done. But I want to build on it and earn that Baggy Green spot for good.”
