James Anderson, England’s legendary Test fast bowler, made a stunning return to T20 cricket after nearly 11 years. Playing for Lancashire in the 2025 Vitality Blast, Anderson picked up 3 wickets for 17 runs, his career-best T20 figures, against Durham.
At 42 years old, Anderson proved age is just a number. He hadn’t played a T20 match since August 2014, but showed his skills are still sharp. Bowling three overs in the powerplay at Chester-le-Street, he dismissed both openers — Alex Lees and Graham Clark — and later took the wicket of Colin Ackermann.
Despite going for a six and a four early on, Anderson bounced back strongly. He took his first wicket in his second over and later returned to grab his third. His efforts restricted Durham to 150 runs.
These were Anderson’s best T20 bowling figures, beating his previous best of 3/23, achieved in a T20I against the Netherlands back in 2009. This match marked a complete turnaround from his last T20 game in 2024, where he gave away 52 runs without a wicket in the Blast final against Warwickshire.
With this match, Anderson also became one of the few bowlers to dismiss the top three batters of an opponent in a T20 game. His impact was key in Lancashire’s narrow win, as they chased down the target of 151 in the final over.
Lancashire continued their perfect start in the Vitality Blast, securing their third straight win. They had already beaten Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire, and with Anderson’s return, the team looks even more dangerous.
Although Anderson retired from international cricket in 2024, he remains a powerful force in domestic cricket. His return has excited fans and given Lancashire a major boost in their 2025 campaign.
