The West Indies cricket team has been fined for bowling at a slow pace in the first One Day International (ODI) against England. The match took place on May 29, 2025, at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Match referee Jeff Crowe, from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel, imposed a fine on the West Indies players. Each player was fined five percent of their match fee. The team was found to be one over short of the required minimum over-rate after time allowances were considered. This means the West Indies took longer than allowed to complete their allotted overs.
The penalty follows Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct. This article covers minimum over-rate offences. According to ICC rules, players must bowl the required overs within a set time. If they fail, each player is fined five percent of their match fee per over missed.
West Indies captain Shai Hope accepted the sanction without contest. Because of this, a formal hearing was not needed. The charge was brought forward by the on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Martin Saggers. The third umpire Adrian Holdstock and the fourth umpire Graham Lloyd supported the decision.
The West Indies team will need to improve their bowling speed in future matches to avoid similar fines.
England’s Dominant Performance in the First ODI
England dominated the first ODI and won the match by 238 runs. England posted a massive total of 400 runs for eight wickets. Key contributions came from Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Jacob Bethell, who all scored half-centuries.
In response, the West Indies team struggled with the bat. They were bowled out for just 162 runs. England’s bowlers Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton led the attack by taking three wickets each. The heavy defeat showed England’s strength and West Indies’ batting challenges.
The second ODI between England and the West Indies is scheduled to begin today. Both teams will try to put the first match behind them. West Indies will look to improve their pace and batting. England will aim to continue their strong form and secure another win.
Fans can expect an exciting game as both teams battle for victory.
