Moeen Ali feels BCCI would have wanted Jasprit Bumrah to captain the team against England. However, the board may decide against it due to the pacer’s injury record and workload.
Rohit Sharma, on May 7, took to his Instagram to announce his retirement from the longest format of cricket. This left the Indian test cricket team without a captain to lead them in their upcoming series against England.
Since then, there have been serious speculations about India’s test leadership role. The top-order batsman, Shubman Gill, is the prime candidate to become India’s next test captain. His leadership journey will most likely begin with India’s five-test series against England from June 20.
Former English all-rounder Moeen Ali has spoken out about India’s vacant leadership role. According to him, Shubman Gill might be the right choice, but he also highlighted his inexperience in leading in test matches.
Moeen also stated that BCCI would have preferred Jasprit Bumrah to become captain and lead India against England. But looking at his workload, the board might hold back from doing that.
“I think it will be Shubman Gill. Ideally, the BCCI would want Jasprit Bumrah to captain because he is a very good captain, a good leader who has done it before. But because of his injury record, he might not be able to last the whole series,” Moeen Ali told Sky Sports.
“I think they’ll give the captaincy to somebody who’s done decently so far in Test cricket. Gill leads Gujarat Titans in IPL, so they’ve still got a very, very good captain, inexperienced, yes, but a good captain and good brain, but it’ll be a challenge in the English conditions,” he added.
Bumrah captained the team during the Border-Gavaskar Series in Rohit’s absence and led the team to a victory in the Perth test. However, after he got a back spasm in Sydney, rumours started that the pacer might not become the test captain.
For Gill, this will be the second tour to England. Although seen as a future India captain, his Test record isn’t strong. His average in tests is only 35 in Test cricket after 32 games, which drops to 29 in away Tests. His only away Test century was in Bangladesh.
