Gautam Gambhir Seeks Full Authority Over Team India Operations

Gautam Gambhir has reportedly asked for full autonomy from the Board of Control for Cricket in India. He entered the management with the idea of ending the superstar culture of Indian cricket.

Following the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from test cricket, India head coach has asked the BCCI to have the final say in the team’s proceedings. As per a Dainik Jagran report, he wanted to end the superstar culture in the team.

After his entry, his first move was to come up with the 10 point diktat. This concept makes it compulsory for all players to play in domestic cricket when available. The second phase was to build a side for the future.

Gambhir’s Role in Major Retirements

Reportedly, Gambhir played a major role in phasing out Rohit and Virat from test cricket. Both players announced their retirements from test cricket, one week before the selection of the test squad to play against England. Their retirement news came after the management decided to go for younger players for the England tour.

This is the first time a head coach played a part in phasing out two of the biggest names in Indian cricket. Generally, the captain runs the team, while the coaches take the backseat, allowing big players to lead. Recent examples include Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid. They always acted as the captain’s ally and hardly ever questioned their authority.

The report said that Gambhir’s case was different. He had as much say in policy-making, squad selection, and other team-related matters as the captain. Now that Rohit, Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin have retired, he can have complete control over the team .

Who Could Challenge Gambhir’s Authority?

Further as per the reports, Gambhir would have Shubman Gill as captain, who is more likely to listen to him. Gill is the front-runner to be the new test captain. However, he still has not reached the level where he could challenge Gambhir. The only player who could challenge Gambhir from the current team is pacer Jasprit Bumrah.
