The Indian Premier League will allow franchises to replace players temporarily for the remainder of the season. This decision came following the suspension of the league which created unavailability of overseas players.

Amid the escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan, the BCCI suspended IPL for one week. This prompted overseas players to return home due to safety concerns. After a ceasefire was called by both countries, many foreign players decided to return. However, some of them have opted out due to their international commitments clashing with the league.

IPL to Allow Temporary Replacements

Due to unavailability of players, IPL will allow franchises to sign temporary replacement players. But those players will not be eligible for retention ahead of the next auction.

The tournament will resume on May 17, with new dates prompting calendar clashes for few players. The majority of overseas players will return to India for the rest of the season but some have withdrawn, including Jake Fraser-McGurk (Delhi Capitals) and Jamie Overton (Chennai Super Kings).

The IPL regulations permit franchises to replace players before the 12th match of the league in case of injury or illness. But the league has decided to change this rule which allows temporary replacements to be signed for the rescheduled season.

IPL’s Memo Regarding the Replacement Rules

“Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament,” the league said.

“This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026.”

IPL also clarified that players replaced before the suspension will be eligible for retention in the next auction.
