Shreyas Iyer has created a unique record in IPL history. In the 2025 season, he led Punjab Kings to the playoffs, making it his fifth playoff qualification as captain in just six seasons. No other captain in the league has matched this level of consistency in such a short time.
Iyer’s playoff record is outstanding. He has now reached the playoffs with three different teams—Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings. That’s a first in IPL history.
2019 – Delhi Capitals reached Qualifier 2
2020 – Took Delhi to the final
2021 – Again led Delhi to Qualifier 2
2024 – Won the IPL title with KKR
2025 – Guided Punjab Kings to a top-two finish
His playoff qualification rate now stands at 83.3%. In comparison, MS Dhoni has a rate of 75%, Rohit Sharma has 63.6%, and Virat Kohli has 44.4%.
Iyer is not loud. He doesn’t show off. He leads with a calm head and clear plans. Despite injuries, team changes, and mid-season captaincy shifts, he has stayed focused. His ability to bring out the best in his players makes him a strong leader.
With Punjab finishing in the top two, Iyer now has two chances to reach the final. If he wins the title, he will become the first captain to win back-to-back IPL titles with two different teams.
Captain Playoff Qualifications Seasons Success Rate
Shreyas Iyer has quietly become one of the best IPL captains ever. With every season, he’s building a legacy that’s hard to ignore.
