The Lucknow Super Giants vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru fixture produced big moments with ball and bat. One significant event during the match involved a Mankad appeal and its withdrawal.

LSG faced RCB for the final league match of the tournament on Tuesday at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. RCB secured a crucial win to get a top two finish, sealing their place in Qualifier 1 against Punjab Kings.

Rathi’s ‘Mankad’ Appeal

On the last ball of the 17th over of the RCB innings, Rathi stopped midway into his bowling action and took off the bails on the non-striker’s end. The umpire asked Rathi if he wanted to stay with his appeal. When Rathi gave his consent, they referred the third umpire.

This mode of dismissal, known as ‘Mankad’ is controversial. It is considered a poor show of sportsmanship even when it is well within the laws.

However, after referring to the third umpire, it was given not out. It was concluded that the bowler was well into his delivery and did not stop his bowling release point on time.

After the decision was given, LSG captain Rishabh Pant was shown withdrawing the appeal. So even if Rathi had done the dismissal correctly, it still would have been not out. This show of sportsmanship from Pant left a warm feeling in fans’ hearts for the LSG skipper.

Jitesh Takes RCB Home

Asked to bat first, LSG posted 227 for three on skipper Rishabh Pant’s 61-ball unbeaten 118 and Mitchell Marsh‘s 37-ball 67.
Jitesh took full advantage of an unexpected chance. He smashed 20 runs off the next over from Avesh Khan. The stand-in captain for RCB then sealed the win with a six in the following over. He helped RCB pull off their highest-ever chase in IPL history and secure a top two finish. He scored an unbeaten 85 off 33, featuring 8 fours and 6 sixes.
