Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has said that fans need to be patient with Vaibhav Suryavanshi and wait for the next IPL season. He has also warned Suryavanshi to be wary of the second-season syndrome.
The 14-year-old came under the spotlight on just his third appearance in the tournament. He made a historic IPL debut by becoming the youngest cricketer to play in the tournament at the age of 14.
Taking this momentum further, he scored the second-fastest century in IPL history and became the youngest centurion in T20s. Many praised his exceptional performance, and some fans see him as someone playing for the national team.
However, he soon got a reality check when he got out for a duck against Mumbai Indians. He was dismissed by Deepak Chahar and was dissappointed by his early wicket.
Speaking to Sports Today, Gavaskar said that it is yet to be seen whether Suryavanshi will suffer from ‘second-season syndrome’.
“I think we must be patient. In any sport, when you’re a newcomer, people don’t know much about you,” said Gavaskar. “The second-season syndrome is the one you’ve got to look for. The second season, when you’re a bit more recognised, you see all the big hitters who did so well last year,” he added.
“This time around, bowlers and the support staff have decided what to do or what to bowl, where not to bowl. This is the reason why some of the successes of last season have not been as successful this time around,” said Gavaskar.
Gavaskar went on to say that how Suryavanshi handles expectations will be key in deciding his performance next season.
“It’s a sensational debut. Look, to score a fifty in T20 format is a huge achievement. But here is a young man, only 14 years old, who scored 100 with 11 sixes and 7 boundaries. So I mean, the batting talent is there, and it’s how he handles all the expectations in the future that is going to be the key for him,” said Gavaskar.
