While everyone is doubting MS Dhoni’s return to CSK’s captaincy, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has come out in support of him. He argued that Dhoni’s return was not made for his benefit but for the team’s.

The 5 time IPL champion Chennai Super Kings got eliminated from the playoffs race early this year. They have won only 2 matches out of ten and sit at the bottom of the points table with 4 points. After Ruturaj Gaikwad sustained an elbow injury, Dhoni took over the captaincy role. However, this did not change Chennai’s chances of getting into the playoffs. Since then, there have been many doubts surrounding Dhoni’s choice of continuing to play.

Gavaskar Defends Dhoni

Amid this controversy, Sunil Gavaskar has come to Dhoni’s defence, stating that he made the decision to return for CSK’s sake and not his. He made this decision as a team man and not for his benefit.

Speaking in an interview with Sports Today, Gavaskar explained how he sees the situation. “Any player makes decisions not so much for himself, but for what is likely to be good for the team,” said Gavaskar. “Whatever decision MSD made about playing this season would have been based solely on what’s best for CSK.”

Dhoni was retained by CSK following a rule change that dictated players who haven’t represented India in over 5 years could be retained at the same cost as an uncapped player.

Gavaskar’s Advice to CSK

Gavaskar suggested CSK focus on the bowling end and build their auction strategy accordingly.

“First and foremost, they need to get their auction strategy right. I’m not too sure their scouting team is as effective as those of other franchises,” explained Gavaskar. “That said, scouts shouldn’t rely solely on leagues like the Jharkhand League, UP League, or others like them. Success in those leagues, often played on smaller grounds against relatively ordinary bowling attacks, doesn’t necessarily translate to higher levels.”
