Sam Curran, playing in only his fourth match this IPL season, was seen in top form against PBKS on Wednesday. The English all-rounder put on a dominant show with his bat, showcasing the quality cricket CSK has been missing this year.
Curran scored 88 runs off 47 deliveries, including nine fours and four sixes, maintaining a strong strike rate of 187.23. While the other batters failed, Curran and Dewald Brewis furthered Chennai’s innings and brought them to a total of 190 in 19.2. Despite his incredible innings, CSK was not able to defend their score and lost to PBKS.
While speaking to Hindustan Times, the former England captain Eoin Morgan expressed his opinion on CSK’s decision not to use Curran much this season. “Yes, he played well last night. When I was captain before, he’s always a very versatile cricketer. He’s always a guy who shows a huge amount of fight and has a lot more power than you think, particularly with the bat,” he said.
Explaining why Curran hasn’t received many opportunities this season, Morgan felt, “I think the reason Sam played again last night was because MS Dhoni said that he thought it was as good a batting track that they’ve played on at Chepuak.
So perhaps that on a slower wicket, they feel that somebody else was more effective. I know they’ve gone for Jamie Overton over him in previous games. So, possibly thought that on slower wickets, Jamie might be more effective.”
Curran’s electrifying performance came against PBKS in the 49th fixture of the tournament. During his half-century celebration, he made a gesture towards the CSK dugout, indicating a signal to call him. Later, after his dismissal, he had a quick chat with the management of the team.
