Gujarat Titans‘ pacer Kagiso Rabada has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a recreational drug. The 29-year-old South African cricketer revealed the news through an official statement, explaining his recent absence from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Earlier this week, Rabada quietly left the Titans camp and flew back to South Africa, citing “personal reasons.” However, on Friday evening, he confirmed that his departure was linked to a failed drug test.
“As has been reported, I recently returned to South Africa from participating in the IPL for personal reasons,” Rabada said. “This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug.”
The pacer is now undergoing a provisional suspension while the matter is being handled by relevant anti-doping authorities.
Rabada offered a sincere apology to his fans, team, and cricketing authorities. “I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down,” he said. “I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me—it goes beyond personal ambitions.”
He also emphasized that this incident will not define his career. “I will keep doing what I have always done—working hard and playing the game with passion and devotion.”
In the same statement, Rabada expressed gratitude for the support he has received during this difficult period. “I couldn’t have gone through this alone,” he said. “I’d like to thank my agent, Cricket South Africa (CSA), the Gujarat Titans, SAGA, and my legal team. Most importantly, I’d like to thank my friends and family for their understanding and love.”
Rabada’s absence is a major blow to the Gujarat Titans. He had featured in two matches this season, picking up two wickets. Team captain Shubman Gill had earlier indicated that Rabada might return in 10–12 days, but that now seems unlikely.
His availability for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in June is also uncertain. CSA has yet to make an official statement on his status for the national team.
