Rohit Sharma received a special tribute on Friday when the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) named a stand at the famous Wankhede Stadium after him. Former India coach Rahul Dravid congratulated Rohit with a warm message, appreciating his impact on Indian cricket.
In a video shared by Mumbai Indians, Rahul Dravid joked that Rohit had hit so many sixes into the stands that they had to name one after him. Then he added serious praise, saying the honour showed Rohit’s huge contribution to Mumbai and Indian cricket.
“Congratulations! I’m sure young fans entering Wankhede will see that stand and get inspired. You truly deserve this,” Dravid said.
He also joked, “When I need tickets in Mumbai, now I know who to call.”
At the ceremony, Rohit Sharma spoke about how special the honour felt. He said he never imagined this while growing up and dreaming of playing for Mumbai and India.
“It feels surreal. I have retired from two formats but still play one. Being honoured while I’m still active makes this more meaningful,” Rohit said.
He thanked the MCA and everyone involved, calling it a proud moment. “Having my name alongside legends and world leaders is something I never expected,” he added.
The MCA also named stands after former BCCI and ICC president Sharad Pawar and former India captain Ajit Wadekar. The MCA opened the office lounge in memory of the late Amol Kale, former MCA president.
This recognition comes just days before Rohit returns to play for Mumbai Indians at Wankhede on May 21 against Delhi Capitals, making the event even more special.
With many of Rohit’s best innings played at Wankhede, this new stand will strengthen his legacy in Indian cricket’s heartland.
