Shreyas Iyer is slowly building his reputation to be placed among the greats in the game of cricket. His heroics for Punjab Kings against Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 2 on Sunday made his name grow even more.

Sunday night began as a rainy and frustrating night for both Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians. However, it turned into an exciting battle between the two teams. PBKS defeated MI in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium with five wickets in hand.

For the first time since 2022, the Indian Premier League will get a new Champion this year. The man who made it possible was Punjab’s skipper Shreyas Iyer with his excellent 87 off 41 innings on Sunday.

Three-Time Finalist Iyer

The Indian batter has now become the first captain in IPL history to take three different teams in the IPL final. He led the Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020, however they lost to Mumbai Indians. Last year, Iyer led the Kolkata Knight Riders to the final where they won against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Punjab Kings will now face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final on June 3 in Ahmedabad. Iyer will hope to become the first captain to lead two different teams to a title win and set a precedent.

On Sunday, Iyer played an incredible knock of 87 runs in 41 balls, laced with five fours and eight sixes. Coming to bat at No. 4, Iyer along with Nahel Wadhera, added 84 runs for the fourth wicket in just 47 balls.

Iyer’s Rise Among Legends

Although not being considered in the same league as MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, Iyer is gradually getting there. The two legends have contributed significantly to cricket, whether playing in the IPL or for the national team. To be considered among them would take a lot on both leadership and batting front.

However, Shreyas Iyer has been proving himself with his brilliant performances across several IPL seasons. Broadcaster, Jatin Sapru, even went on to say that there is a new ‘captain cool’ and ‘chase master’ now.

“We have got a new Captain Cool in the house. His innings will be remembered for ages as he has walk the talk. He will play his third IPL final as a skipper. We associate Captain Cool and Chase Master titles to Dhoni and Virat and today we saw Iyer doing a similar job. He is the new Captain Cool and Chase Master,” Jatin Sapru said in front of Harbhajan Singh and Aakash Chopra.
