Mumbai Indians have made a significant signing, bringing in English left-arm fast bowler Luke Wood as a replacement for the injured Jason Behrendorff for the upcoming IPL 2024 season. Wood, who has represented England in five T20Is, has an impressive record in T20 cricket with 147 wickets from 140 matches.
Wood, who will join the Mumbai Indians for his base price of INR 50 lakh, has previously played in various T20 leagues such as the BBL, PSL, BPL, and The Hundred. However, this will be his first stint in the IPL, adding depth to Mumbai’s fast-bowling department.
Behrendorff’s injury comes as a setback for Mumbai Indians, as he was a key performer for them last season, picking up 14 wickets from 12 games. Additionally, Sri Lankan left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka’s injury and South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee’s recovery from pelvic inflammation further complicates Mumbai’s fast-bowling options for the early stages of IPL 2024.
Despite these setbacks, Mumbai Indians still have a strong bowling lineup, including Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Madhwal, Nuwan Thushara, and Arjun Tendulkar. Their new captain, Hardik Pandya, has also confirmed his fitness to bowl in the tournament. Moreover, Romario Shepherd adds depth as a seam-bowling all-rounder.
However, there are concerns over the availability of star batter Suryakumar Yadav, who is recovering from two surgeries and is uncertain for Mumbai’s opening match against Gujarat Titans. Overall, Mumbai Indians will be looking to manage their bowling resources effectively and maintain their strong performance in the IPL.
