The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the 15-member squad for the ICC World Cup 2023, marking India’s return to hosting the prestigious tournament. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the squad during a press conference, with KL Rahul’s inclusion emerging as the most significant development.
India, winners of the World Cup in 1983 and 2011, will host the competition for the first time since their triumphant campaign on home soil. As preparations kick into high gear, former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar praised the selection committee for assembling a title-worthy squad.
KL Rahul’s Return
KL Rahul’s comeback to the squad took centre stage in the announcement. The versatile batter, known for his ability to open and keep wickets, has proven his fitness and readiness for the World Cup. Although Rahul did not feature in India’s group-stage matches at the ongoing Asia Cup, he is expected to join the team ahead of the Super 4 stage in the continental tournament.
While Rahul’s return brought cheers, the selection committee also made tough decisions by trimming the World Cup roster. Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna, and Sanju Samson were dropped from the squad. Notably, Tilak Varma and Prasidh Krishna are part of India’s contingent for the Asia Cup, while Sanju Samson is currently in Sri Lanka as a backup batter.
Sanjay Manjrekar’s Perspective
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar applauded the selection committee’s choices, acknowledging the challenges they faced. He expressed confidence in India’s prospects, foreseeing them reaching the World Cup semifinals. However, he also highlighted the formidable competition India would encounter in the latter stages of the tournament.
The 15-member Indian squad is led by Rohit Sharma, the captain across all formats, who will open alongside the talented Shubman Gill. The top order features the formidable Virat Kohli, while the middle order boasts Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav. Rahul and Kishan are entrusted with wicketkeeping duties. India’s all-rounder options include Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Shardul Thakur. The bowling attack is spearheaded by the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, and Kuldeep Yadav.
