The future of IPL 2025 is hanging in the balance as hostilities increase between India and Pakistan. Adding to the uncertainty, the overseas players are growing anxious over the ongoing conflicts.
Amid rising tension between India and Pakistan, the future of the ongoing IPL season is uncertain. Based on reports, the tournament could be provisionally suspended. Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was stopped midway amid air strikes from Pakistan in neighbouring cities. Players are set to be evacuated through a special train by BCCI.
Meanwhile, reports from various sources indicate that overseas cricketers are growing anxious over the current situation. They have reportedly requested to leave India and go back home. However, an official decision on the remaining matches has not been made yet.
BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla has stated that the board has been monitoring the situation closely. Also, they are seeking the government’s advice regarding the future of IPL.
He further said that the BCCI would take a decision on May 9, as the situation keeps evolving every day.
“We will do whatever we are told and inform all stakeholders. At the moment, our priority is the safety of all players, fans, and stakeholders,” Shukla was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
One of the options the cricket board can consider is to stop the league for now and resume when the tensions die down. This can be done as the Indian cricket team has nothing scheduled till mid-June. However, this method can prove to be an issue as overseas players would like to leave India as soon as possible.
Another alternative is to postpone the tournament and restart later in the year at a different venue. However, with the rest of the year jam-packed for all teams, BCCI might find it hard to explore this option.
