The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) received shocking news from the star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Reportedly, he informed the board about his workload and fitness.
In shocking news for the Indian Test cricket team, Jasprit Bumrah will only play three of the five test matches against England. The pacer reportedly informed the Ajit Agarkar-led selectors committee, ahead of the announcement of the official squad for the series.
Bumrah got injured midway through the fifth test against Australia in Sydney. He also missed the Champions Trophy and the first few matches of IPL as well. The pacer feels that his body cannot endure the pressure of a five-match test series.
“Jasprit Bumrah has already informed the board that his body can’t take the toll of more than three Test matches,” the report claimed.
This takes Bumrah, who is the vice-captain of the test team, out of the leadership contention. He was the most popular choice to take over as captain after Rohit Sharma. But the return of the back injury that kept him out of action for an extended period changed things.
The selectors did not want a captain who was unsure of playing all matches due to workload management. That is how Shubman Gill became the prime candidate for the captaincy race.
Besides Bumrah, Mohammed Shami’s fitness is also a concern for the selection committee. Reportedly, the veteran bowler is not ready to bowl in longer spells.
“Shami is bowling four overs in IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad, but the board and selectors don’t know whether he can bowl more than 10 overs in a day. Test matches in England may demand longer spells from the pacers, and we can’t take chances,” a source in the board informed The Indian Express.
With Bumrah and Shami’s availability uncertain, the left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, who has been highly impressive with the new ball in white-ball cricket, is likely to get his maiden Test call-up.
