Jasprit Bumrah, India’s leading fast bowler, is expected to miss the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh in September. The decision comes as the team management looks to refresh the pace-bowling unit by incorporating new talent, particularly a left-arm seam and swing bowler.
According to a report from the Press Trust of India (PTI), the Indian team management is considering resting Bumrah to ensure he is in peak condition for the more demanding Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, scheduled for November 2024. An anonymous source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) emphasized the importance of having a fully fit Bumrah for the five Tests against Australia, stating, “The selectors are clear that India needs a 120 per cent fit Jasprit Bumrah for all five Tests Down Under.”
In Bumrah’s absence, the selectors are eyeing two primary candidates: Arshdeep Singh and Khaleel Ahmed. Arshdeep, who was the leading wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup 2024, has shown promise in both T20Is and ODIs, making him a strong contender for his Test debut. His inclusion would mark a significant step in his career, particularly as he has been groomed for red-ball cricket under the guidance of former India head coach Rahul Dravid, who facilitated his participation in County cricket last year.
Khaleel Ahmed, another left-arm option, is also in the mix, although he has faced challenges with consistency. The team management sees this as an opportunity to bring in fresh variations to the bowling attack, which could be crucial for adapting to different conditions.
The decision to rest Bumrah aligns with the team’s broader strategy to prepare for a busy schedule ahead. Following the Bangladesh series, India will host New Zealand for a three-Test series, which will serve as a critical preparation phase before the high-stakes series in Australia. The selectors are keen on ensuring that Bumrah is match-ready for these pivotal encounters.
The Indian team is eager to bounce back after a disappointing ODI series loss against Sri Lanka. With the World Test Championship campaign underway, Rohit Sharma and his squad are determined to regain their winning momentum.
