Ajinkya Rahane seemed surprised when told about Rohit Sharma’s retirement news during the post-match press conference. He learned the news after KKR’s loss to CSK on Wednesday.
Rohit Sharma’s decision to retire from test cricket came as a shock to many, along with his longtime friend and former teammate, Ajinkya Rahane. Speaking to the press after losing the match to CSK, Rahane was informed about Rohit’s retirement news.
Rohit took to his Instagram to announce that he was stepping away from the longest format of cricket with immediate effect. This decision came one day after India’s national selectors met to discuss the leadership group for the upcoming tour of England.
“Oh, is it?” Rahane said while responding to Rohit’s retirement news. “I didn’t know. I’m actually shocked. I was playing a game, so I wasn’t aware. But I just want to wish him the best.”
Rahane praised the opener’s transformation in test cricket. “He started in the middle order at No. 5 or 6 and then opened the innings. The way he adapted was amazing. He always looked to take on bowlers and play with freedom – that’s something he wanted others to do as well,” Rahane said.
“I’ll probably call him once I get back to the dressing room or send him a message,” Rahane added. “But I definitely want to congratulate him on a fantastic Test career.”
Rohit has 4,301 test runs over 67 matches, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties and averages at 40.57. While Rohit has already bid adieu to T20Is after leading India to a World Cup title last year, he will continue to be available for ODIs and the IPL.
