The former Indian captain has expressed his desire to retire from the red-ball format ahead of the five-test series against England in June.

As BCCI is planning to announce the squad for the upcoming England tour, the news of Virat’s potential retirement is causing a stir. Virat has told BCCI that he is done with Test cricket, but the board is urging him to reconsider.

Virat Hinted at His Retirement

According to a report in The Times of India, Virat Kohli had already hinted at his retirement during the Border-Gavaskar series. He scored a century in the first test, but struggled in the rest of the series. Reportedly, not many took it seriously as it was an intense series for India.

In his Test career, Kohli has scored 9,230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85, with 30 centuries so far. His last four-year fall in performance has dropped his average below 50.

Virat was Denied Taking Over as Captain

It was also learnt that Kohli offered to take over as captain again, as the new captain is still to be selected after Rohit’s retirement. He conveyed his desire to lead the team as a stop-gap arrangement till the next captain is groomed for the upcoming WTC cycle.

However, head coach Gautam Gambhir and the board don’t want a temporary solution. They are looking for a youngster who will lead India from the England series.

“A new WTC cycle is starting. Future and continuity has to be kept in mind as far as the team is concerned. Even coach Gautam Gambhir would want a set of players he is likely to work with for an extended period. There can’t be any stop-gap solutions for such an important series. The last two Test series haven’t been ideal for the team, and the England series is very crucial,” a source tracking developments told the Times of India.

The BCCI still wants Virat to be present in the squad for the England tour. As Rohit Sharma also announced his retirement this week, the board need experienced players like Virat in the team.
