The Indian Premier League 2025 encountered an abrupt halt as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended the tournament for a week due to escalating cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. This decision came shortly after the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala was abandoned under emergency security protocols.

Blackout Protocol Triggered After Drone Attacks Near Dharamsala

Security authorities called off the match on Thursday evening after a blackout protocol was initiated due to drone attacks in Pathankot (85 km away) and Jammu (around 197 km away). As part of the emergency measures, officials dimmed the floodlights at the stadium and evacuated players, staff, and spectators without delay.

With the Dharamsala airport closed, Indian Railways arranged a special Vande Bharat train to transport both teams safely to Delhi. The prompt action ensured no casualties or panic at the venue, drawing praise from teams and officials alike.

Punjab Kings Release Statement, Call for Responsible Reporting

On Friday, the Punjab Kings issued an official statement confirming that all players, support staff, and team personnel were safe. The franchise extended gratitude to the BCCI, Indian Railways, police, and local authorities for facilitating a smooth evacuation.

“We’re pleased to communicate that all our players, support staff and everyone associated with Punjab Kings cricket operations are safe and secure,” the statement read.

The team also urged the media to maintain calm and avoid sensationalism during this sensitive period.

“This isn’t the moment for panic or noise. It’s a moment to move forward with care and perspective,” they added in their message to the press.

BCCI Suspends IPL for One Week, Stands in Solidarity with Armed Forces

The BCCI announced the temporary suspension of IPL 2025 on Friday afternoon. The board assured fans that it would reassess the situation in collaboration with government agencies and share revised fixtures in due time.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized the board’s unwavering support for the Indian armed forces and national security efforts.

“While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security,” Saikia said.
“The BCCI salutes the bravery of our armed forces leading Operation Sindoor and will align its decisions in the best interest of the nation.”

As the IPL faces this unprecedented break, the focus now shifts to the national security landscape. Cricket, for the moment, has taken a back seat to unity and collective resilience.
