The second edition of the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup, which was scheduled to begin on June 6 in Sri Lanka, has been postponed. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) made the decision due to heavy rains and health concerns caused by a recent outbreak of the chikungunya virus in Sri Lanka.
ACC President Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the development on Monday, June 2, 2025. “The ACC is committed to providing opportunities for young women cricketers to develop their skills and compete at the highest level,” Naqvi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He added that the ACC understands the importance of the tournament and will work hard to reschedule it as soon as possible.
According to Naqvi, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board requested the postponement. SLC President Shammi Silva wrote to the ACC, raising concerns about the unfavorable weather and rising health risks.
Last week, Sri Lanka’s meteorological department issued warnings of strong winds and heavy rains across several provinces. These conditions are the result of a strengthening southwest monsoon. The spread of chikungunya, a mosquito-borne disease, has also raised serious health concerns for teams and officials.
The ACC stated that new dates for the tournament will be announced soon. They are currently working on finding a suitable time and venue to hold the competition safely.
The inaugural Women’s Emerging Asia Cup took place in Hong Kong in 2023. Eight teams participated in that event. India A won the title by beating Bangladesh A by 31 runs in the final. Shreyanka Patil was named the Player of the Series.
So far, no update has been given about the Indian team’s participation in the rescheduled tournament. The BCCI had earlier said it had not made any final decisions about India’s involvement in the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup or the Men’s Asia Cup, which India is set to host in September 2025.
The postponement comes as a disappointment to many, but the safety of players and staff remains the top priority.
