Cricket Australia has issued a statement allowing its players to play in the IPL if they choose to. It also supported players who want to opt out of the tournament due to safety concerns.
The BCCI confirmed on Monday that IPL 2025 will resume on May 17 after a week’s suspension due to rising Indo-Pak military tensions. This suspension came following the cancelled match between PBKS and DC due to safety reasons.
Now that both India and Pakistan have called a ceasefire, the board wants to ensure the continuation of the tournament without any problems. However, the biggest difficulty is the availability of overseas players who have already returned to their homes.
Cricket Australia has decided to support its players in whether they want to return for the remainder of IPL 2025 or not. The league was suspended for a week amid the tensions between India and Pakistan. The halt prompted Australian players, coaches, and support staff to leave India.
The BCCI announced the revised schedule of the league on Monday night. Now it is up to the players to decide, keeping in mind their safety and other cricketing commitments.
“Cricket Australia will support players in their individual decisions whether to return to India or not. Team management will work through the preparation implications for the World Test Championship final for those players who choose to play in the remaining IPL matches. We are maintaining communication with the Australian Government and BCCI around security arrangements and safety,” said CA.
The tournament will resume with a match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This match will be held in Bengaluru, one of the six venues hosting the remaining matches. The rescheduled final will be on June 3, just eight days before Australia’s WTC final against South Africa on June 11.
Key WTC squad members, including Pat Cummins, Travis Head (SRH), Josh Inglis (PBKS), Mitch Marsh, and Mitchell Starc (DC), are involved in the IPL. Josh Hazlewood, who plays for RCB, is recovering from a shoulder injury but is expected to be fit for the WTC final.
