Gavaskar: “I Don’t Think Kohli, Rohit Will Play 2027 World Cup”

India’s two biggest cricket stars — Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma — may not feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup, says Sunil Gavaskar. The batting legend shared his honest views after both players retired from Test cricket within a week.

Kohli and Rohit have expressed their desire to continue in ODIs. They were key players in India’s Champions Trophy win, with Kohli shining against Pakistan and Australia, and Rohit performing in the final against New Zealand.

But Gavaskar is not sure they’ll stay until 2027.

“No, I don’t think they will be playing,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.
“I’m being very honest. But who knows — if they hit form and keep scoring hundreds, even God can’t drop them.”

Selection Committee Will Decide

Gavaskar believes the final call lies with the selectors.

“They have been massive performers in ODIs,” he said.
“But the selection committee will ask — can they still perform in 2027? If the answer is yes, then they’ll play.”

By 2027, Kohli and Rohit will be close to 39 and 40 years old. Age and fitness will be key factors.

Kohli and Rohit’s ODI Careers So Far

Kohli has scored 9,230 runs in 123 Tests, with 30 centuries. He averaged 46.85. Rohit, who joined Test cricket later, made 4,301 runs from 67 matches, with 12 centuries at an average of 40.57.

Both still want to win the ODI World Cup. But Gavaskar hinted that self-doubt may have started to creep in after India’s failed Test tour of Australia.

“Sometimes, players ask themselves — do I still have it?” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.
“When that starts, it’s tough to continue. They might feel stepping away is better.”

Kohli Still Has Fire, Say Former Players

Despite his retirement, many feel Kohli still has a lot to give. He missed the 10,000-run mark in Tests by just 670 runs.

“He was one of our main players,” said former selector Sarandeep Singh.
“We’re surprised. He could’ve played more.”

The decision to retire from Tests may be final. But for ODIs, the door is still open — if performance speaks.
