Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a 15-member squad. This is for their upcoming six-match ODI tour of Ireland and England, beginning May 21. The selectors have kept faith in the core group that clinched notable series victories against Bangladesh and England at the end of 2024, reaffirming Shai Hope’s captaincy for the tour.
The Caribbean side will begin their campaign with three ODIs against Ireland at Clontarf Cricket Club in Dublin, followed by three games against England, starting at Edgbaston on May 29. The series is part of West Indies’ build-up to the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Selectors rewarded consistency by retaining most of the players who featured in the successful year-end campaign. Brandon King and Evin Lewis will likely open the innings, with Keacy Carty anchoring the No. 3 spot. Jewel Andrew, who earned recognition with his performances in the ICC Under-19 World Cup, continues his rise with another call-up.
However, the squad will miss the flair of Shimron Hetmyer, currently playing in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals. Hetmyer did not make the cut, reportedly due to team combination preferences. In contrast, pace duo Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde return after recovering from injuries that kept them out of the Bangladesh series.
Left-handed batter Amir Jangoo, who smashed a century on debut last December, retained his spot and will look to strengthen his claim for a permanent place in the XI.
Head coach Daren Sammy stressed the importance of the tour in the broader context of World Cup preparations. “These matches are crucial stepping stones toward the 2027 World Cup. The team is finally showing signs of consistency. We’re building a culture that reflects our ambitions — to be bold, fearless, and adaptable across conditions,” Sammy said in a statement issued by CWI.
West Indies currently sit ninth in the ICC ODI rankings. They are fighting for direct qualification for the 2027 World Cup. It will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
In a significant shake-up in the support staff, CWI has roped in former West Indies pacer Ravi Rampaul as the new bowling coach. He has replaced James Franklin. Rampaul is a key figure in the 2012 T20 World Cup triumph. He brings a wealth of experience and will play a pivotal role in guiding the young Caribbean quicks.
Former Ireland all-rounder Kevin O’Brien will also join the coaching team during the Ireland leg of the series, adding local knowledge and tactical depth.
