Former Indian pacer Varun Aaron has advised Delhi Capitals to use KL Rahul as an opener and to be fair to Karun Nair in the remainder of the 2025 IPL season.
Delhi Capitals got some relief against Sunrisers Hyderabad after the match was abandoned due to heavy rain in Hyderabad. Delhi Capitals only managed to score 133/7 in 20 overs.
With this low target, SRH looked to win the match and add 2 points to their tally. However, rain poured down on SRH’s hopes, and the match resulted in a draw, with both teams sharing the points.
After the match, former Indian bowler Varun Aaron advised DC to stop using KL Rahul in the middle order and assign him the role of opener. “If you want stability in this batting lineup, send KL Rahul to open. He’s going to solve all your problems,” Aaron said on ESPNCricinfo’s ‘TimeOut’.
“If they are going to play around with the openers, then might as well put in the most experienced opener as an opener. Because they have put in Karun Nair, I don’t think it’s fair on him,” he added.
Aaron also added that DC is guilty of moving Karun Nair up and down the order. This constant change affects his performance and makes it difficult for him to remain consistent.
“They have really moved him up and down the order quite a lot. So if you are putting in, if you’re making radical changes a lot, put in the guys who are most suited to it and can take in the pressure,” said Aaron.
In the ongoing IPL season, KL Rahul has been batting at No.4, while Delhi Capitals have experimented with the opener position with numerous options such as Jake Fraser-McGurk, Faf du Plessis, Abishek Porel, and Karun Nair. When Du Plessis got injured, Rahul opened for DC and gave a match winning knock.
However, Rahul was not used as an opener since then. Nair hit an incredible 89-run knock against Mumbai Indians. But since then, he has not been able to perform.
