Virat Kohli has made his intention clear to retire from Test cricket to the BCCI, despite the board’s efforts to persuade him to rethink his decision.
Former Indian captain Virat Kohli, ahead of the five-test series against England, has reportedly expressed his wish to retire from the Test format. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has urged him to reconsider the decision.
“He has made up his mind and has informed the board that he is moving on from Test cricket. The BCCI has urged him to rethink as the crucial England tour is coming up. He is yet to revert on the request,” according to sources.
Based on reports, Virat’s decision to retire was not sudden. He had been contemplating his Test future since the Border-Gavaskar series in December 2024. He managed only 190 runs across five matches, despite a century in the first test of the series.
Virat’s decision came ahead of India’s England tour. If Virat doesn’t change his mind, it will leave the Indian cricket team with an inexperienced middle order. With Rohit out of the picture too, India will lack seasoned players.
Speaking at the event about the mental pressures after the recent Test failures, he had said, “Once you start taking on the energy and the disappointment from the outside, then you start burdening yourself way more… And then you start thinking about things, like ‘I’ve got two or three days left on this tour, I need to make an impact now’. And you start getting more desperate. That’s something I’ve surely experienced in Australia as well.”
The star cricketer has represented India in 123 Tests and has scored 9,230 runs with an average of 46.85.
Kohli’s recent Test form has seen a decline. Over the past five years, he has scored 1,990 runs in 37 Tests with only three centuries. This marks a noticeable drop from his earlier performances.
