Shubman Gill is ready to lead India in Test cricket. He will captain the team in a five-match series against England in June. This marks the beginning of a new phase in Indian cricket.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin have retired from Test cricket. They stepped down after the Australia tour. With them gone, Gill leads a young team into the new World Test Championship cycle (2025–27).

Gill Calls the Role a Huge Honour

Gill spoke in a video on the Indian cricket team’s Instagram page. He said getting the captaincy was a dream come true. “It feels a bit overwhelming,” he said. “It’s a great honour to lead the country in Test cricket.”

He added that he always wanted to play Tests for India. “Every kid dreams of it,” he said. “Now I have the chance to lead. That’s a big responsibility.”

Leadership Style and Team Culture

Gill wants to lead with action. “I believe in leading by example,” he said. “Not just with runs, but with discipline and hard work.” He wants to build trust in the team.

He said it is important to understand each player. “Every player has a different background and personality,” he explained. “A good leader knows what brings out the best in each of them.”

He values open conversations. “Knowing them beyond cricket is important,” he said.

Learning from Legends

Gill said he learned a lot from Rohit and Virat. “Virat Bhai was aggressive and full of passion,” he said. “Rohit Bhai was calm and sharp. He always knew how to guide the team.”

Gill said Rohit’s way of communicating helped everyone. “He always made it clear what he expected,” he said.

Balancing Batting and Captaincy

Gill has experience as captain. He led Gujarat Titans in the IPL and India in a T20I series in Zimbabwe. He said captaincy taught him to stay focused.

“When I’m batting, I try not to think like a captain,” he said. “I just want to play freely and make the right calls as a batsman.”

Passion for Test Cricket

Gill said he loves the format. “Test cricket is challenging,” he said. “It’s not just about skills. It tests your mind and body.” He enjoys long series like the one ahead.

He said the five-Test series against England at home last year was his favourite. “I scored over 450 runs,” he said. “That gave me a lot of confidence.”

Confident About England Tour

Gill said the England tour will be tough. “But we are prepared,” he said. “We have the belief. We have the skills.”

India’s Test Squad for England:

Players: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc, wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

The tour begins in early June. India will look to start the WTC cycle strong under Gill’s captaincy.
