Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, now star cricketers for India, once fought over a bat during their Under-16 days. The incident happened when Abhishek was batting on 80 or 90 using Gill’s bat. Gill was worried it might break, so he asked for it back, which led to a small fight.
“He was using my match bat and scoring runs. I didn’t want it to break, so I asked him to return it. That’s when we had a bit of a fight,” Gill shared on the Gen Bold show on JioHotstar.
Despite that argument, Gill often let Abhishek use his bat. “He scored a lot of runs with it,” he added. The two have known each other for years and played together for Punjab before making it to India’s U-19 team.
Abhishek Sharma has become a key player in India’s T20 squad. He has scored 535 runs in 17 matches, with two centuries and a strike rate of 193.84. One of his hundreds came in only his second T20I game, against Zimbabwe.
With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired, Abhishek is expected to open the innings at the 2026 T20 World Cup. Shubman Gill could be his partner, but other names like Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan are also in the mix.
Gill, on the other hand, is being seen as a future Test captain. In IPL 2025, he has formed a strong partnership with Sai Sudharsan for Gujarat Titans. The duo helped GT become the first team to qualify for the Playoffs. Sudharsan has scored 617 runs, while Gill is close behind with 601.
Gill praised his partnership with Sudharsan, saying their left-right combo works well. “We run well between wickets and try to outsmart bowlers. In today’s T20 game, that’s rare,” he said.
He also talked about how GT adapts their targets based on pitch conditions. While some teams chase 250-plus totals, GT focuses on smart cricket. “If the pitch allows 250, we go for it. Otherwise, we assess and adjust,” said Gill.
This season has seen a shift in batting approaches. While some matches saw huge scores, many games still had totals around 180-190. Gujarat Titans’ ability to read the pitch and plan accordingly has been a big reason for their success.
