In Mumbai Indians clash with Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, the former received a no-ball penalty after breaking a little-known rule. The IPL later revealed the reason behind this penalty.

The Penalty

On the third delivery of the fifth over, Vipraj Nigam was facing MI’s bowler Will Jacks when the umpire signaled for a no-ball. The reason behind the decision was the fact that there were just three fielders on the off-side for MI.

According to the official IPL Match Playing Conditions in section 28.4.1, there should be no more than five fielders on the on-side. “At the instant of delivery, there may not be more than 5 fielders on the on side,” reads the playing conditions.

MI vs DC Match

Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals on Wednesday night by 59 runs. MI sealed their place in the IPL 2025 playoffs in the clash at the Wankhede Stadium. As a result, DC got knocked out of the tournament.

DC won the toss and elected to bat first. After getting the chance to bat first, the five-time winners managed to score 180/5, mostly because of Suryakumar Yadav’s incredible knock.

Things looked bleak for MI when they kept losing wickets, but Suryakumar saved the team with his unbeaten 73 off 43 balls. His contribution took MI’s innings further, posting a defendable target.

Delhi Capitals were without their regular skipper Axar Patel in the match, who was replaced by Faf du Plessis. Chasing 181, DC rolled over for 121 in 18.2 overs with Sameer Rizvi (39) being the top scorer. Mitchell Santner (3/11) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/12) claimed three wickets each, leading MI’s bowling attack.

Suryakumar Yadav was adjudged the Player of the Match after his stunning knock of 73 runs off 43 deliveries.
