The England cricket team has suffered a major blow as their star pacer Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the West Indies ODI series. He sustained a right thumb injury and will be assessed by the medical team to determine his return.

The 30-year-old pacer will miss three ODIs scheduled between May 29 and June 3, with Lancashire’s Luke Wood replacing him. This setback could also affect his chances of playing in the test format.

England Cricket Board’s Official Announcement

“England Men’s and Sussex pace bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the Metro Bank ODI series against the West Indies due to a right thumb injury. He will be reassessed by the England medical team over the next fortnight to determine when he may return to action. Lancashire’s Luke Wood has been added to England’s ODI squad for the three-match series, which begins on 29 May at Edgbaston,” revealed the ECB in a media release.

Impact on Future Matches

As per the ECB’s media release, Archer will be assessed by England’s medical team in the next two weeks. This will determine when he may return to action. However, his injury could impact his involvement in other upcoming matches. Archer was earlier left out of the West Indies T20I series.

Archer’s International Cricket Comeback

The fast bowler has not played a First-Class match in four years. He last appeared in a match against India in February 2021. England has been gradually reintroducing him into international cricket after his string of injuries.

The England Cricket team is hopeful that Archer will return to their pace bowling attack for the Ashes tour to Australia later this year.

Archer was recently seen in action in the 2025 Indian Premier League season. He took 11 wickets from 12 games for the Rajasthan Royals before departing to the UK.
