Darwin is set to host the multi-format Australia A vs Sri Lanka A series in July. First-class cricket will return to Darwin after a 19-year gap, with five matches scheduled.
The series will begin on July 4 at the Mararra Cricket Ground. All three one-day internationals will be played at the same venue. The first-class series starts on July 13 at Marrara Stadium, which has a drop-in pitch, and returns to the main cricket ground for the second four-day match on July 20.
The last time Darwin hosted a first-class fixture was in 2006. It was when Brad Haddin-led Australia A played against Pakistan A.
This series is part of Cricket Australia’s plan to keep cricket going year-round. With selectors still finalising choices for the Ashes, it offers a chance for emerging talent to stand out. The Australia A squad hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s likely to include players not signed with English county teams. One expected name is Jason Sangha, after a strong domestic season for South Australia.
“It’s fantastic to confirm a multi-format series which gives the next crop of emerging cricketers excellent development opportunities throughout the Australian winter,” Peter Roach, CA’s head of cricket operations and scheduling, said.
“Darwin’s dry season weather between May and September offers both the Northern Territory and Australian Cricket an incredible winter opportunity which allows cricket to be played in Australia all year round.”
