Punjab Kings are in the IPL final after 11 years. Their dramatic win over Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 has sparked celebrations across the team and fans. But a light-hearted moment during the celebration took a slightly awkward turn.
The Punjab Kings players and support staff celebrated their Qualifier 2 win at the team hotel. Captain Shreyas Iyer was at the center of the event. He had played a stunning unbeaten knock of 87 off 41 balls to chase down 204 against Mumbai Indians.
During the celebration, co-owner Ness Wadia joined the players. He stood beside Iyer as they cut a cake together to mark Punjab’s entry into only their second IPL final.
Wadia fed Iyer a piece of cake. Then, in a gesture of affection and excitement, he planted a kiss on Iyer’s cheek.
While others cheered, Iyer showed little emotion. Cameras caught him picking up a napkin and wiping his cheek immediately after the kiss. He then quietly walked away from the group.
The video soon went viral on social media. Fans noticed the captain’s serious expression. Many praised his focus ahead of the final, while others found the moment awkward and amusing.
Despite the big win, Iyer reminded everyone that his mission isn’t over. “As far as I see it, the job is only half-finished,” he said after the match.
Iyer, who also won the Player of the Match award, stated he was “locked in” for the final. Punjab Kings will play Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. A win there would give the franchise its first IPL title.
Iyer’s cool and composed approach has drawn praise. His teammates and fans are hopeful he can lead Punjab Kings to their maiden championship victory.
