Rohit Sharma Emphasizes Hunger for Test Cricket in Player Selection

India’s Test captain, Rohit Sharma, has highlighted the importance of hunger for Test cricket in player selection, stating that only players demonstrating this hunger will be given opportunities. His comments come in the context of the ongoing debate surrounding the commitment of players like Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, who have been part of recent India Test squads but have skipped Ranji Trophy matches since being left out.

Rohit’s remarks follow a warning from BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who cautioned players about facing “severe implications” if they prioritize the IPL over domestic and Test matches.

“This [Test cricket] is the toughest format,” Rohit remarked after India’s victory over England in the fourth Test in Ranchi. “And if you want success and want to excel in this tough format then you need that hunger. It is very important. We will give opportunity only to players who have that hunger.”

Rohit did not mention any players specifically but suggested that the team management is vigilant about identifying players who lack the desire to play Test cricket. He emphasized that players who demonstrate hunger, perform well, and contribute to the team’s success will be prioritized in selection.

Addressing the issue of players skipping domestic matches, Rohit noted, “Players who have that hunger, players who want to stay here and perform, [and] play in tough conditions, we will give preference to them. Obviously, it is pretty simple: if you don’t have hunger, there’s no meaning [in] playing such players.”

Both Iyer and Kishan have been under scrutiny for their recent actions. Kishan withdrew from India’s Test squad in South Africa due to personal reasons and has not played any competitive cricket since. Iyer, on the other hand, opted out of Mumbai’s Ranji quarter-final citing a back issue.

Rohit’s comments reflect a broader ethos within the team, where players are expected to prioritize Test cricket over other formats. He stressed the importance of the red-ball game, calling it the most difficult format and highlighting the hard work required for success.

The ongoing Test series against England has seen several young players making significant contributions, showcasing their hunger and talent. Rohit praised these newcomers, noting their composure and willingness to adapt to the team’s culture.

“Moving forward, it’s a big plus for us with a lot of these guys coming and showing that they belong here,” Rohit concluded. “I know it’s still early days but they have shown that they have all the ability, [and] all the skills to excel in this format.”
