Gloucestershire’s promising young cricketer Ben Wells has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 23 due to a rare heart condition.
Wells, who debuted for Gloucestershire in 2021, has been diagnosed with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a condition that also forced former England cricketer James Taylor into premature retirement in 2016.
The diagnosis came during routine pre-season medical assessments, leading to Wells being advised to avoid vigorous exercise. He expressed gratitude for the early detection, acknowledging that the diagnosis likely saved his life.
In his short career, Wells showed promise as a talented cricketer, scoring 40 in his only first-class innings and a match-winning 108 not out in a One-Day Cup match against Durham. He was known for his white-ball skills, contributing a crucial 43 not out from 22 balls in last year’s Vitality Blast.
Wells, a graduate in Physics from the University of Exeter, was praised for his dedication and talent by Gloucestershire, who are supporting him through this challenging time.
In an emotional statement, Wells thanked cricket for the memories and opportunities it gave him, saying, “Cricket has been a massive part of my life for as long as I can remember, it’s been all I’ve ever wanted to do.”
