Masterful Ashwin: India's Indispensable Spin Wizard

The first test between India and the West Indies saw a rejuvenated Indian team completing a comfortable triumph over a rather timid West Indies. Debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal, captain Rohit Sharma and veterans Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin crafted an easy win for the Indian team. While Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma shined with centuries, it was Ashwin’s 10-fer that actually stole the show.

Ashwin the master

Ashwin picked up 5 wickets in the first innings and 7 wickets in the second, once again showing why he is the Number 1 Test Bowler in the World. Ashwin’s performance in the First Test once again sparked debate over his exclusion from the squad for the World Test Championship final against Australia.

Ravichandran Ashwin‘s prowess as a spinner and his invaluable contributions to the Indian cricket team have established him as an integral part of the squad. With his exceptional skills, versatility, and consistent performances, Ashwin has proven time and again why he should be India’s first-choice spinner in Test cricket, regardless of the playing conditions.

Ashwin’s remarkable achievements highlight his impact and effectiveness in Test cricket. With eight ten-wicket match hauls, he stands shoulder to shoulder with the legendary Anil Kumble, an achievement only surpassed by four other bowlers in the history of the game. Additionally, his tally of 34 five-wicket hauls is a testament to his ability to consistently dismantle opposition batting lineups, leaving a lasting impact on matches. In fact, he is now just one shy of Kumble’s record, firmly placing him in elite company.

Should Ashwin be India’s first choice spinner overseas?

One of the distinguishing factors that set Ashwin apart is his ability to excel in overseas conditions. While spinners often face challenges on pitches that offer less assistance, Ashwin has defied such limitations with exceptional performances around the globe. His stellar match figures of 12 for 131 in Dominica against West Indies, with 7 for 71 in the third innings, highlight his mastery and adaptability.

Ashwin’s repertoire of skills is not confined to one particular style of spin bowling. His ability to constantly vary his release points, angles, and trajectories keeps batsmen guessing, making him a potent threat on any surface. Moreover, his meticulous assessment of the batsman’s technique, coupled with his exceptional cricketing acumen, enables him to exploit weaknesses and engineer dismissals effectively. Ashwin thinks like a batsman while bowling, providing him with an added advantage in outsmarting opponents.

Apart from his on-field performances, Ashwin brings invaluable leadership qualities to the team. His experience and understanding of the game make him a valuable asset in guiding the younger players and fostering a positive team environment. Ashwin’s mentorship has proved crucial in nurturing the talents of budding spinners in the Indian setup.
