Kolkata Knight Riders are facing outrage from fans due to a social media post, celebrating the first anniversary of their third title win. They put out a special post, but omitted former captain Shreyas Iyer.
Shreyas Iyer led KKR to their third title win in 2024, ending their 10-year wait to lift the trophy. On May 26, 2024, they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad and became three-time champions. To celebrate this win, KKR posted a picture which left fans furious with the franchise.
A close look reveals that KKR picked only those players who are still a part of their squad. Players like Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Vaun Chakaravarthy, and Harshit Rana were in the picture. Fans were extremely displeased by the ommission of Iyer.
Despite a nearly flawless 2024 season, KKR decided not to retain Iyer ahead of the mega auction. Notably, Iyer did not receive enough credit for KKR’s title win last year. Mentor Gautam Gambhir, who is now the Indian team head coach, was mostly credited for the franchise’s win. Iyer, not holding back, revealed that he didn’t get enough credit for winning the title at KKR last year.
A year later, KKR find themselves eliminated from the playoffs race, while Shreyas Iyer-led PBKS sit at the top of the table. Punjab have made it into the playoffs after 11 years.
This is not the first time Iyer has turned a team’s fortunes around after taking over as captain. He recently became the only IPL skipper to take three different teams to the playoffs. He did that at the Delhi Capitals, repeated the same at KKR and now continues it at PBKS.
Iyer responded to the post by taking PBKS to the top of the table a few hours later.
“The camaraderie has been there for the past few years between Ricky and I, he gives me a lot of freedom. He lets me be decisive on the field, all these things have culminated in a great way,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“Every individual stepped up at the right time. Starting from game one, we’ve been in the mindset of wanting to win despite the situation. We’ve had players putting their hands up when we were in the dumps. Kudos to the support staff and management, too.”
“Ricky has been fantastic with player management. It’s important for me to get trust, too. That happened with the wins early on. Had conversations with them too. You have to maintain good relationships throughout. I feel the dressing room has been top notch throughout,” he added.
