The Indian Armed Forces, on Wednesday, launched a precision missile strike on Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). This came in response to the Pahalgam attack on April 22, which led to 26 deaths. Since then, conditions have worsened with multiple drone attacks from both sides.
The country’s armed forces are risking their lives and engaging in dangerous battles to keep our borders safe. So, during this difficult time, talking about money seems trivial and insensitive. But it is also something that cannot be ignored.
The team owners, players, broadcasters, and sponsors are not all who will lose out from this postponement. Many others, like people selling merchandise, vendors at stadiums, cab and auto drivers, will feel the impact too. Even restaurants and bars will be affected, which see more customers when games are held in their city.
As of now, IPL 2025 is suspended for a week. In the coming few days, the BCCI will decide the plan of action for the future. 16 matches of the current season are remaining, and the verdict in the coming days will determine whether these games will be held or not.
It was learn that every cancelled match comes at a heavy cost. Each cancelled match is estimated to cost Rs. 100 to Rs. 125 crore. Even with a part of it covered by insurance, about half the loss remains when broadcast, sponsorship, and other match-related incomes are taken into consideration.
If for some reasons the tournament has to be cancelled, the host broadcasters could lose about a third of the Rs. 5,500 crore they expected to earn from ads. All IPL teams will be affected, especially those who depend on income from sources like broadcast and sponsorship money.
