As the highly-anticipated Cricket World Cup approaches, all eyes are on India‘s star pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, whose injury status has become a focal point of concern for the team management and fans alike. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently shared an update, stating that Bumrah has resumed bowling and is set to play practice matches at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Moreover, there were reports indicating his potential involvement in the upcoming T20Is in Ireland. However, when questioned about this, Captain Rohit Sharma clarified that he is unaware of any such plans.
Amid the uncertainty surrounding Bumrah’s return to action, Rohit Sharma emphasized the significance of match fitness for players coming back from a prolonged injury layoff. The Indian skipper expressed hope for Bumrah’s full recovery ahead of the World Cup, underlining the valuable experience he brings to the team. “The amount of experience he (Bumrah) brings is very important. Right now, he’s coming from a serious injury, and I’ve no idea if he’ll travel to Ireland because the team hasn’t been announced yet,” Rohit stated before the first ODI against West Indies.
Reiterating the importance of Bumrah’s match fitness, Rohit Sharma acknowledged the key components that players need to regain after a severe injury, such as the feel and rhythm of competitive cricket. The team management is closely monitoring Bumrah’s recovery progress, coordinating with the NCA to ensure the premier bowler remains injury-free for an extended period.
“We’ll see what has been planned, and everything depends on his recovery. We are in constant touch with the NCA, and things look positive at the moment,” Rohit added, expressing optimism about Bumrah’s return to full fitness.
India’s preparations for the World Cup have been challenged by injuries to key players, including the likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. Rohit Sharma acknowledged the importance of experience in crucial tournaments and the need to identify players who will represent India in the mega event. Despite the hurdles, the team management is focused on providing opportunities to potential World Cup squad members, aiming to give them ample match practice to gain valuable experience.
“When there are injuries, you just don’t know what you can do about it. Along with focusing on the XI, we need to focus on other 15-20 players too because anyone can get injured,” Rohit remarked, highlighting the significance of building a robust backup squad to tackle unforeseen challenges.
