In a surprising turn of events, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has left the Team India camp in Colombo and returned to Mumbai due to undisclosed personal reasons. While the exact cause for his sudden departure remains shrouded in mystery, reports suggest that Bumrah is expected to rejoin the squad for the crucial Super Fours stage of the Asia Cup 2023.
Bumrah’s absence could be felt keenly in India’s upcoming match against Nepal on September 4, where a victory is imperative for India to secure their place in the next round, set to begin on September 6. The 28-year-old pacer’s prowess with the ball is well-known, and his potential unavailability comes as a concern for Team India.
In the highly-anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday, Bumrah made his return to the Indian ODI squad. However, much to the disappointment of fans and his teammates, he didn’t get an opportunity to bowl a single delivery as rain played spoilsport at the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy.
Although his contribution with the ball was missed, Bumrah showcased his versatility with the bat, becoming India’s third-highest scorer in their total of 266 with a valuable 16 runs. His ability to contribute with the bat in the lower order adds another dimension to his game. Coincidently, this became Bumrah’s highest total ever in ODIs. His previous highest was 14 not out which came against South Africa before he was injured.
Prior to the Asia Cup, Bumrah demonstrated excellent form while leading the Indian team in the T20I series in Ireland last month. He emerged as the joint-highest wicket-taker alongside teammates Ravi Bishnoi and Prasidh Krishna, picking up four crucial wickets from three matches. While Bumrah’s departure raises questions about India’s fast-bowling department in the upcoming match against Nepal, it is hoped that he will return soon and be back in action for the crucial Super Fours stage as India looks to make their mark in the Asia Cup 2023.
