England Test captain Ben Stokes has taken a bold step in his journey back to full fitness by quitting alcohol. The 33-year-old all-rounder made this decision to support his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury and to improve his performance on the field during a crucial phase for England cricket.
Stokes has been out of action since December 2024, when he tore his left hamstring during the Test series against New Zealand. Before that, he suffered a similar injury during The Hundred in August, which forced him to miss games against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
During this rehab period, Stokes realised he needed to take better care of his body. He stopped drinking alcohol on January 2, aiming to make his recovery smoother and more effective.
“I said to myself, not until I finish my injury rehab and get back on the field. I don’t think I’ll ever be completely sober, but I’ve not had a drink since January 2,” Stokes said on the Untapped Podcast.
The decision comes from a deeper reflection. Stokes admitted that after past injuries, he began questioning if alcohol had affected his body’s ability to recover.
“We did have a drink four or five nights before I got injured. Could that have played a part? It wouldn’t have helped,” he said.
This self-awareness led him to adopt a stricter, more disciplined approach. Stokes now focuses on training hard, eating right, and staying away from distractions.
“I have to work so much harder off the field — in the gym, rehab, everything — to make sure I’m ready,” he added.
Stokes is expected to make his comeback in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge on May 22. However, the bigger challenge lies ahead — the five-Test series against India followed by the Ashes later in 2025.
As the leader of England’s red-ball team, Stokes understands the responsibility on his shoulders. His recent choices reflect a deeper commitment to fitness, leadership, and team success.
His journey now becomes a story of discipline, growth, and determination — as he looks to return not just as a player, but as a stronger and sharper leader for England.
