Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary has requested Virat Kohli to reconsider his decision to retire from Test cricket. Kohli recently shocked the cricket world by announcing his retirement from the longest format. The 36-year-old made the announcement just weeks before India’s five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20.
Tiwary said he felt sad after hearing the news. He praised Kohli for giving importance to Test cricket even during the rise of T20 leagues around the world. Tiwary believes Kohli still has a lot of cricket left in him.
“I felt a bit sad. Kohli has kept Test cricket alive in the T20 era. He always gave priority to Tests, even as a captain. I would ask him to close his eyes and take his retirement back. That would bring happiness to all cricket fans,” Tiwary said in a chat with Cricbuzz.
Tiwary also shared his own story. He took retirement from first-class cricket but returned just five days later to play for Bengal. He said sometimes players make sudden decisions that they regret later.
“Sometimes you face a moment of brain fade. That can lead to quick decisions. Maybe that happened with Kohli too. He was close to reaching 10,000 Test runs. Even if that number doesn’t matter to him, many young cricketers dream of such a milestone. He had a chance,” Tiwary added.
Kohli’s sudden retirement has left a big hole in the Indian Test team. Rohit Sharma also stepped away from Test cricket recently. With both senior players gone, India is entering a new era in the longest format.
India now needs a new Test captain and strong performances from the younger players. The upcoming Test series against England is a huge chance for fresh faces to prove themselves on the international stage.
BCCI will soon have to decide who will lead the team in Tests. Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah are the front-runners for the captain’s role. However, choosing one name won’t be easy.
With two legends stepping aside, Indian cricket now looks to the future. Whether Kohli reconsiders or not, fans will remember his passion for Test cricket and his major contribution to the format.
