As England’s cricketing juggernaut gears up for the 2023 Cricket World Cup, the spotlight is shining on the potential inclusion of two powerhouse players – Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. The country’s head coach, Matthew Mott, has revealed that both Stokes and Archer are being considered for a spot in the provisional 18-member squad, set to be named on August 15. The World Cup title defence for England is slated to commence on October 5 in Ahmedabad, with a clash against New Zealand in the tournament opener.

Matthew Mott confident about getting Stokes back

Ben Stokes, a titan in the cricketing arena, stepped away from the limited-overs format in July 2022. Citing the strain of the international schedule on players, he retired, making his stance resolute after the 2023 Ashes. When questioned about his participation in the World Cup, he succinctly stated, “I am retired.” Stokes had further hinted at considering surgery to address a lingering knee issue ahead of next year’s Test series against India.

Despite his retirement, Matthew Mott is leaving no stone unturned to explore the possibility of enticing Stokes back into the fold. Known for his straightforward approach, Stokes will likely engage in discussions with key figures like Jos Buttler. Mott expressed optimism, saying, “There has not been a clear direction on what he’s going to do yet, but we are still hopeful.”

Hoping Archer repeats 2019 World Cup heroics

Jofra Archer, another asset with tremendous potential, is also on England’s radar. Archer had stood out as England’s leading wicket-taker in the 2019 World Cup, amassing 20 wickets at an average of 23.05. However, injury setbacks – ranging from hand, elbow, to back issues – have hindered his progress. A stress fracture in his right elbow resurfaced in May, sidelining him for the English summer. His most recent competitive appearance was for Mumbai Indians against Chennai Super Kings in the 2023 IPL.

Matthew Mott acknowledges the risks associated with Archer’s fitness challenges, yet remains hopeful. “There is a high chance that we will take a risk on a proven performer that has done it on the world stage,” Mott stated. The coach further emphasized their commitment to providing every opportunity for Archer to prove his fitness within the tight timeline.

England’s preparation for the World Cup includes a packed white-ball schedule. A series of four T20Is and four ODIs against New Zealand, followed by three ODIs against Ireland in August and September, are set to shape their approach. The squad for the Ireland series could potentially reflect experimentation, depending on the team’s departure schedule for India.
