Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes that consistent success in T20 cricket comes from having multiple match-winners. His comments came after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 65 of IPL 2025.
RCB, despite a strong start, fell short as SRH clinched a 42-run win.
RCB began their chase confidently. Openers Virat Kohli and Phil Salt gave them a flying start. But the middle and lower order failed to carry the momentum. In the last few overs, RCB managed just 22 runs. They finished with 189, far behind SRH’s total.
SRH opener Ishan Kishan played a match-winning knock. He stayed unbeaten on 94. Young pacer Eshan Malinga also impressed. He picked up two wickets and effected a crucial run-out of RCB captain Rajat Patidar.
With this loss, RCB slipped from second to third in the points table. Their chances of finishing in the top two now hang in balance.
Following the match, Manjrekar posted a key observation on social media. He stressed the need for a well-rounded team effort in T20s.
“To be a consistent T20 team you need many heroes not one or two. Let’s have a look at how many different players have been POTM for the 4 playoff teams. GT – 5 RCB – 7 PBKS – 5 MI – 7 Hmm…” Manjrekar wrote on X.
His message underlined that balanced teams perform better in long tournaments.
The contrast in the final overs told the story. SRH smashed 63 runs in the death. RCB, in comparison, could only add 22. Malinga’s figures of 2/37, along with his sharp fielding, sealed the game for Hyderabad.
Manjrekar’s comment echoed clearly in RCB’s defeat. T20 cricket, he reminded, isn’t about one or two stars. It’s about a team of heroes.
