Virat Kohli’s sudden retirement from Test cricket has surprised fans and fellow cricketers. One of them is Shikhar Dhawan, Kohli’s longtime teammate. Dhawan recalled special memories with Kohli and praised his energy, discipline, and strong mindset.
Kohli retired from Tests on May 12, 2025, after playing 123 matches and scoring 9,230 runs. He ended his red-ball career with 30 centuries and an average of 46.85. Dhawan said he was shocked by the decision and felt Kohli still had more to offer in Tests.
In an interview with TimesofIndia.com, Dhawan talked about his debut Test century in 2013 against Australia in Mohali. He said Kohli celebrated that knock with great passion.
“I scored 187 in that match. When I reached the century, Virat came out of the dressing room, jumped, clapped, and whistled. He celebrated as if he had scored it,” said Dhawan. “Later, in the dressing room, he played loud Punjabi music, and we continued celebrating.”
Dhawan revealed that Kohli always brought joy to the team with his energy and love for cricket. He called Kohli the dressing room DJ who also enjoyed mimicking teammates.
Dhawan also shared how Kohli kept the dressing room atmosphere light with jokes and impressions. “Virat loves doing mimicry. He’s very good at copying people — how they walk, talk, and especially how Ishant Sharma speaks,” he said.
“We always had fun pulling each other’s legs. His sense of humor matched mine. These moments will always stay with me.”
Dhawan praised Kohli’s fitness, mental strength, and hunger to be the best. “He had the desire to achieve something big from a young age,” he said. “Even before he was strict with his diet, he was always disciplined.”
He added, “Once he joined the Indian team, his fitness and discipline improved even more. He kept pushing himself to get better and perform for the country. That’s what made him different.”
Kohli now steps away from Tests as India’s fourth-highest run-scorer, just behind Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar. But to his teammates, like Dhawan, he’ll always be remembered for the energy, support, and joy he brought both on and off the field.
