Shardul Thakur Set for Comeback in India’s Test Squad Against England

India’s fast-bowling all-rounder, Shardul Thakur, is set to return to play in the red-ball format. His long-awaited comeback will be against England in the upcoming five-test series.

After being away from test cricket for nearly 18 months, Shardul Thakur is set to make a test return in the upcoming series against England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will announce the squad for the England tour soon.

Shardul last played a test match in December 2023 against South Africa at Centurion. Since then, he has been overlooked for India’s three home test series and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

Shardul’s Return to Test Cricket

India is set to play a five-match test series against England, starting on June 20 in Leeds. Ahead of the five-test series, India A will face England Lions in three unofficial test matches.

As per a Cricbuzz report, BCCI will most likely name Shardul Thakur in the test squad. Shardul, who can balance both bowling and batting, can prove to be valuable as India needs a reliable fourth pacer. Shardul can reclaim his spot in the tests by proving his worth in the upcoming series.

Shardul’s Domestic and Test Performance

Shardul Thakur’s exceptional performance in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy for Mumbai has increased his chances of making it to the squad. He scored 505 runs, including one century and four fifties. He finished as Mumbai’s second-highest run scorer.

Being equally effective with the bowl, he took 35 wickets. This form has caught the selectors’ attention, making him a key candidate for the England tour.

Shardul has played 19 test innings in which he took 31 wickets with an economy of 3.64. In batting, he has scored 331 runs in 18 innings with an average of 19.47. He has smashed four half-centuries.
